Education

The longer you are out of college, the less relevance the "Education" section has. In fact, some employers do not even look at GPAs after your first job. Depending on your seniority, the position of this section can differ:

  • Undergrads: "Education" section is still considered pretty relevant and for most undergrads this section should be placed the top of the resume since it has high relevance to your ability to perform. The exception is that if you have impressive internship experiences and/or projects, then those sections can go above.
  • Senior Software Engineers and beyond: "Education" can be shifted to the bottom since your recent work experience is way more relevant and affects your ability to perform more than the class you took more than a decade ago which you probably don't remember much of.

Recommendations

✅ Mention your GPA if it is good

Anything above 3.0 (on a 4.0 point scale) is considered good.

If your overall GPA is low but your GPA for a subset of classes (e.g. a specialization is good), you can just mention that.

✅ Use official degree name

Ensure your degree name matches the official degree you were awarded.

✅ Mention honor class and awards where relevant

This helps put a perspective to your grades and helps you stand out.

✅ Mention Teaching Assistant (TA) roles where relevant

For which classes if you have worked as a TA, mention it. Teaching is a sign that you have mastery of a topic.

Common Mistakes

❌ Do not write too much

There is no need to focus too much on education if you are not a junior candidate (fewer than 2 years). The space is better spent on professional achievements.
